The US embassy to the Holy Sea has decided to fly the pride flag for the month of June. As the world observes June as LGBT Pride Month, the US embassy in the Vatican does so as well.
The United States State Department announced on Twitter that they will be flying the pride flag at their embassy to the Holy See in Rome. The embassy serves as America’s point of contact with the Catholic church in the Vatican.
“The United States respects the dignity and equality of LGBTQI+ people. LGBTQI+ rights are human rights,” the embassy tweeted on June 1.
The US administration has decided to fly the pride flag on the same flagpole with the American flag during the “pride season” at its embassies and consulates around the world.
The authorization to fly the pride flag, which is not mandatory, was decided ahead of May 17, which is observed as the international day against homophobia and transphobia.
The decision to fly the flag, also known as the rainbow flag, comes with the
request of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. However, authorities have asked to avoid it in certain countries if it could result in a backlash.
The previous Trump administration prohibited flying the rainbow flag from embassy flagpoles. However, it allowed displaying the flag inside buildings.
During the Obama regime, the US embassy in the Vatican made pro-LGBT social media posts during Pride Month in 2014 and 2011.
On June 1, President Joe Biden, the second Catholic president of the US, issued a statement in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Pride Month, 2021.
“Pride is both a
jubilant communal celebration of visibility and a personal celebration of self-worth and dignity,” Biden stated.
Biden also urged the Congress to pass the Equality Act, which establishes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes.
Many in the mainstream media have praised Biden as a “devout Catholic” during his presidential campaign and have smeared other Catholics as “right-wing” for following Catholic teachings. The Catholic church considers abortion a reserved sin and can only be absolved by a Bishop.
Pope Francis, the most liberal Pope in recent history has been
very open to LGBTQ individuals in the church, but even so, he says the Catholic church cannot bless same sex marriag. The State Department has authorized the flying of activist flags like the Black Lives Matter flag as well.
Other Republicans on Twitter have asked why the State Department isn’t flying the Pride Flag in Muslim majority countries like Iran or Indonesia where homosexuality is still illegal and punishable by death. Some called the move cowardice declaring it is “deliberate antagonism aimed at a group they know will not, unlike other groups, fight back.”
The Catholic church is also under siege in Canada after the discovery of 215 sets of remains at the Kamloops Indian Residential School that was run by the Catholic church from 1890 to 1969.
